How many cigarettes equivalent are in e-cigarettes?

This depends on many different variables including but not limited to:

  • The type of device you're using (cigarette-style, vape pen, pod mod, box mod, etc)
  • How much e-liquid is in the tank/cartridge/pod
  • The resistance of the coil
  • The power output of the battery

Every e-cigarette is different, and each brand will have a different idea to how many cigarettes equivalent their device is. A lot of brands have realized that trying to estimate the amount of cigarettes an e-cigarette is comparable to is both difficult and unrealistic, but it can sometimes help people decide what to buy and at what quantities if they're giving up smoking.

If you work on the basis that a cigarette is about 20 puffs, you may find it helpful to look for how many puffs equivalent a brand might label their e-cigarettes with. These would strictly be estimates and cannot be taken at face value due to the fact that every vaper will use their device differently or at different intervals.

If you're looking at a cigarette-style device, so something that is designed to look and feel like a cigarette, the batteries are typically small and the coil resistance is high, with a small amount of e-liquid (usually under 1ml). Most brands will say that a single cartridge is equivalent to 1 pack of cigarettes (~400 puffs).

With a typical pod mod, you can generally expect each pod to last a bit longer than a cartridge as they usually contain more e-liquid. With every pod mod, each containing different specifications of battery, coil and e-liquid capacity, the only real way to determine how many equivalent cigarettes it is, is for you to use it and take note of how long each refill lasts compared to how long you spend smoking.

With a disposable vape, you can get anything from 300-500 puffs (or even up to 600 in the case of the Crystal Bar) which could be comparable to 30 cigarettes in terms of number of inhalations.

With a box mod or vape pen that takes e-liquid, it becomes even harder to estimate. Box Mods have a high power output and a low resistance coil, so e-liquid is heated at a much higher rate (producing vast clouds of vapour). This uses up e-liquid much quicker than any other type of device, and you can expect the same amount of e-liquid from 2 or 3 cartridges to be used during one "session" of vaping with a box mod, but again this is down to how much you use the device. With a vape pen that uses e-liquid, this again depends on what tank you're using. As always it's best to try them out yourself to see how long they last for you.

Unfortunately it's near impossible to answer the question accurately, and any answer you may find to this question will always be an estimate.
